why Japanese?
I chose to study Japanese this year because my mom wants to go to Japan and I want her to take me with her. I have also consumed a lot of Japanese media over the years and I thought it would be interesting to actually understand what they are saying without the subtitles. I am excited to learn kanji, adjectives, how to express likes/dislikes, and to be able to read Japanese much quicker. The most challenging thing for me has been reading and responding in Hiragana. It is very time-consuming because in order for me to understand what I am reading I must write out the Hiragana into Romaji, write out my response in Romanji, then translate my response into Hiragana. I hope to stop relying on the Romaji soon!

I've also enjoyed some Japanese media off and on. ^_^ It's definitely a fun experience to watch something you've relied on subtitles to understand for so long, and then realize that you can start picking out words, then sentences, and gradually more!

ReplyDeleteI know how you feel about the whole Hiragana - Romaji - English translation. It's definitely time consuming. At the rate we're going, I'm sure we'll be so used to translating that we'll get much faster and better at it. I hope your trip to Japan will be as awesome as mine were!
